Isak closes in on Vardy record with eight-match scoring run

Scoring for the EIGHTH Premier League match in a row, Alexander Isak shows no sign of slowing down in a remarkable season for Newcastle United.

The Sweden international struck twice to secure a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday, netting his 14th and 15th league goals of the campaign.

Here, we look at the numbers that highlight the sensational performances of the Premier League's most in-form star.

Isak's amazing stats

Isak has scored in eight successive Premier League matches and is now just three games away from the record held by Jamie Vardy, who struck in 11 consecutive matches in the competition for Leicester City between August and November 2015.

The Swede is only the fourth player in Premier League history to score in eight consecutive appearances, after Ruud van Nistelrooy (who did so twice for Manchester United), Vardy (twice for Leicester) and Daniel Sturridge (for Liverpool).

Isak's second goal v Wolves

Isak is the first Newcastle player to score in eight consecutive Premier League appearances, beating the seven-match streaks achieved by Alan Shearer (September-November 1996) and Joe Willock (April-May 2021).

Isak has scored 11 Premier League goals since 4 December, a tally that beats the total that eight clubs have managed in the same period: Wolves, West Ham United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Ipswich Town, Manchester United, Everton, Leicester City and Southampton.

With 46 Premier League goals in total, he is now the joint third-highest goalscorer for Newcastle in the competition's history, level with Peter Beardsley. He is only one behind second-placed Callum Wilson, with Alan Shearer out in first place.

Isak is only two behind Freddie Ljungberg’s tally of 48 as the highest-scoring Swede in the Premier League.

Isak is three goals behind Mohamed Salah in the 2024/25 Golden Boot race.

He has become the seventh Newcastle player to reach 25 Premier League goals at St James’ Park, doing so in just 34 home matches. Of his predecessors, only Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer got to 25 goals in fewer fixtures than Isak, with 23 and 26 matches respectively.

Capitalising on Isak's talents

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe has explained how Isak's two goals against Wolves showed different sides of his ability, and how the team's tactics seek to get the best out of him.

The striker's first goal came when he dribbled infield from the left flank and scored with a deflected strike, while his second came when he received a pass from Bruno Guimaraes right in front of goal.

"He's got that freedom and he's a really good dribbler," Howe told TNT Sports. "We encourage him to get on the ball as much as he can.

"When you've got the technical skills that he has I think it's absolutely huge for us that we don't ask him to be too central and static. We need him on the ball, we want him on the ball as much as we can in the attacking third, so he does have licence and freedom within our structure to go and get the ball.

"But then he needs to score goals like [the second one] as well. That's him in the middle of the goal, and he's scored a lot like that recently from crosses where he's between the sticks. It looks an easy finish. He makes it look easy but it's not. He's got that calmness and coolness which all of the top players have.

"Like most strikers he wants to practise his finishing. It's an art form so he's there every day after training wanting to do more. He has a really good mentality to his training. All the finishes he works on continuously. We've worked a lot on his heading ability and he's scored a few headers this year. It's just trying to add the array of goals that he needs."

Asked if Isak is now the most in-demand striker in Europe, Howe said: "Everyone tells me he is! But I think he is enjoying his football. We love having him here, we love working with him and all I would urge him to do is focus on the next game."

'Hungry for more'

For his own part, Isak is intent on getting even better.

“I feel very good, obviously," he told TNT Sports. "My ambition is always to score. I think that’s the best way I can help the team but I think it is a team performance and not just what I do going forward.

“I know I feel very good, like I am taking steps all the time and I feel like I have developed as a player and I’m obviously hungry for more. I'm happy, but you have to keep working hard to stay at the same level and even do better."
