Football writer Alex Keble looks at the sides who are on a long trophy drought and can end their wait for silverware this season.

Newcastle United ended a 56-year trophy drought with victory in the EFL Cup final against Liverpool on Sunday, also winning their first domestic silverware in 70 years.

It was a rare and wonderful moment in English football – yet it could still be topped in the months ahead.

No fewer than seven Premier League teams competing for trophies this season are on long barren spells, ranging from 17 to 146 years.

Here’s a look at which clubs could end their droughts this season.

Fulham: 146 years

It wouldn’t necessarily mean any more to Fulham than the clubs mentioned below, but nobody has waited as long as them - almost a century and a half – to win their first major trophy. And arguably, nobody has come as agonisingly close to ending their wait in recent history.

Roy Hodgson’s side were within five minutes of taking Atletico Madrid to a penalty shootout in the 2010 UEFA Europa League final, at the end of a fairytale run that had included a famous comeback from 3-1 down to beat Juventus 5-4 on aggregate.

But with the score at 1-1 deep into extra-time, future Man City forward Sergio Aguero set up former Man Utd striker Diego Forlan to win the 2010 final for Atletico with his second goal and extend Fulham's trophy drought, which continues to this day.

Fulham also reached a final in 1975, losing the FA Cup to West Ham United. Their league titles have been confined to the second tier (1948/49, 2001/02, 2021/22) and third tier (1931/32, 1998/99).

This season, Fulham are through to the FA Cup quarter-finals and will face Crystal Palace next in the competition, on 29 March.

Bournemouth: 126 years

Having spent the vast majority of their history well below the top tier of English football, it’s no surprise that Bournemouth have a pretty empty trophy cabinet.

They won the Championship in 2014/15, the division that is now League One in 1986/87, and the Football League Trophy in 1983/84, but as for major honours, they are still waiting for their first.

Reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals in 2020/21 and 1956/57 is the closest they have come to ending that wait. This season's last-eight tie with Man City in the same competition, on 30 March, therefore gives the Cherries a chance to make history.

Brighton: 124 years

Brighton have only had 12 seasons in English football's top tier, including their current run of eight Premier League campaigns, and, like Bournemouth, they have never lifted any significant silverware. The Sussex Senior Challenge Cup is the predominant trophy in their cabinet, with 15 wins.

The closest Brighton have come to winning a major trophy was participating in the 1983 FA Cup final, which they drew 2-2 with Manchester United before losing the replay 4-0 five days later.

Fabian Hurzeler's high-flying side are two matches away from booking another FA Cup final appearance for Brighton, but their quarter-final is against Forest - a team they lost 7-0 to in the league last month.

Crystal Palace: 120 years

Another club looking to win their first major honour, Palace are hoping it will be a case of third time lucky in the FA Cup this season.

Palace have reached the final twice before. In 1990, they drew 3-3 with Man Utd before losing the replay 1-0; in 2016, Man Utd came back to haunt them with a 2-1 victory in extra-time.

With Man Utd already out of this season’s competition, Palace will not fear history repeating itself and, after winning 2-0 at Fulham last month in the Premier League, they should fancy their chances of beating them again in the quarter-finals.

Nottingham Forest: 35 years

Forest’s rich history includes winning two European Cups, one First Division title, two FA Cups, and four EFL Cups. However, their last major trophy was the EFL Cup in 1990, now 35 years ago.

The majority of those honours were collected under Brian Clough, but the great manager never won the FA Cup - a trophy they could lift this season with Nuno Espirito Santo in charge. The closest Clough came to it was losing the 1991 final, 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur.

After such an impressive 2024/25 campaign, claiming the club's first major silverware since Clough's era – in a competition their legendary manager couldn't win – would be a fitting finale. They will face Brighton away in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Aston Villa: 29 years

For a club with seven FA Cups and seven league titles, it’s surprising that Villa haven’t won a trophy since the 1996 EFL Cup.

They have reached four finals since, losing to Chelsea (2000) and Arsenal (2015) in the FA Cup, and to Man Utd (2010) and Man City (2020) in the EFL Cup.

Villa are going for two trophies this season. Remarkably, they haven’t won the FA Cup since 1957 – 68 years ago – and would love to end that run; their next match in the competition is away to Preston in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Villa will be looking to emulate their European Cup triumph in 1982 when their UEFA Champions League campaign resumes.

Playing in Europe's elite competition for the first time in over 40 years, Villa are through to the last eight. Paris Saint-Germain stand in the way of an impressive semi-final place for Unai Emery's team.

Tottenham Hotspur: 17 years

Although they have won eight FA Cups, two league titles, four EFL Cups, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and two UEFA Cups, Spurs have now gone 17 years without winning a trophy.

Woodgate

Their most recent honour was the EFL Cup in 2008. Since then, Spurs have been the runners-up in that competition three times.

This season, Spurs are among the favourites to win the Europa League and follow in the footsteps of the 1972 and 1984 UEFA Cup-winning teams, continuing the club’s rich European heritage.
