Michael Obafemi doubled the lead early in the second half, before Alfie Jones headed in the third and Jake Hesketh quickly made it 4-0.
Josef Yarney replied for the Magpies but substitute Siphesile Mdlalose restored the visitors' four-goal advantage late on.
Saints are four points off fifth place, the final position for the promotion play-offs, with a match in hand. Newcastle drop to 11th.
