Sam Smith, Reading

Sam Smith's hat-trick secured the victory Reading needed to confirm their place in the Premier League 2 Division 2 play-offs, as they beat Stoke City 3-1 at Madejski Stadium.

Southampton's 2-1 win over Middlesbrough at the same time meant Reading needed to win to stay in fifth position and set up a play-off semi-final away to second-placed Aston Villa.

Smith (pictured) settled any nerves with two goals shortly before half-time, but William Forrester gave the Potters hope when he replied in the 55th minute.

However, shortly after Saido Berahino went close to scoring an equaliser for Stoke, Smith completed his treble in the 86th minute to ensure Reading finished one point ahead of Saints. Stoke ended up in 11th place.
