For Phil Neville, it is difficult to recall a match when Michael Carrick was the star for Manchester United. Instead, he feels the midfielder enjoyed being an unsung hero.
Carrick played his last match on Sunday, hanging up his boots after spending 12 seasons at Old Trafford, making 316 of his 481 PL appearances for the Red Devils and winning the Premier League title five times.
"When you think about Michael Carrick’s greatest performances, you can’t actually think of many that stand out," says Neville. "It was just the consistency in his play. Everything was calm, it was under the radar. I think that’s the way he liked it.
“Paul Scholes speaks so highly of him - the ability to find a pass at the right moment, the ability to play against the big teams and make it look like it was all easy, slow and calm. He’s had a brilliant career.”
