Manchester United moved back within nine points of leaders Chelsea after triumphing 2-0 away against local rivals Manchester City.
Chelsea had moved 12 points clear the previous day, but second-placed United responded at the Etihad Stadium.
Wayne Rooney broke the deadlock in the 68th minute, meeting Gary Neville’s cross at the near post, and seven minutes later City defender Richard Dunne diverted Rooney’s low delivery from a similar area into his own net.
City dropped to 11th in the table.
2016: Sunderland 2-1 Manchester United
Sunderland boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 win over Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.
Wahbi Khazri put Sam Allardyce's hosts ahead after three minutes and, although Anthony Martial levelled, David De Gea’s 82nd-minute own goal handed the hosts the three points.
Sunderland remained 19th but moved within one point of safety, while United stayed fifth, six points outside the top four.
