2007: Sunderland 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Sunderland debutant Michael Chopra scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time as Roy Keane’s side beat Tottenham Hotspur on their return to the Premier League.

Chopra had just joined the Black Cats from Cardiff City, and he struck the decisive blow in a match of few clear-cut chances on the opening day.

2010: Kenwyne Jones joins Stoke City

Following three seasons at Sunderland, Kenwyne Jones joined Stoke City for a club-record fee.

Jones spent three and a half campaigns at the Britannia Stadium, making 88 Premier League appearances and scoring 13 goals - three of them coming in successive matches early on in his first season.

He went on to sign for Cardiff City in January 2014.
