1994: John Scales joins Liverpool

Liverpool signed John Scales from Wimbledon.

The defender made 65 Premier League appearances in his two seasons at the club and scored twice, with both goals coming in his first campaign.

Scales also won the League Cup with Liverpool in 1994/95 and was a runner-up in the FA Cup the following term.

He went on to join Tottenham Hotspur In 1996. In total he made 172 PL appearances and contributed to 52 clean sheets.

2012: Southampton 2-3 Manchester United

Robin van Persie struck a hat-trick, including two late goals, as Manchester United twice came from behind to beat Southampton in Sir Alex Ferguson’s 1,000th league match in charge of the club.

Rickie Lambert headed Southampton in front, but Van Persie replied.

Morgan Schneiderlin restored the Saints’ advantage after the break, but Van Persie levelled again in the 87th minute and then hit a stoppage-time winner.

Man Utd moved up to fifth in the table with six points from their opening three matches, while Southampton remained pointless and slipped to the bottom.
