Andrei Kanchelskis broke the deadlock in the 28th minute and Steve Bruce doubled the advantage a minute before the interval.
Man Utd climbed to fourth place with 13 points, moving back within three points of leaders Norwich City. Leeds slipped to 11th with nine points.
2000: Liverpool 3-1 Aston Villa
Michael Owen struck a hat-trick inside the opening 33 minutes as Liverpool inflicted Aston Villa's first defeat of the season.
Owen opened the scoring in the fifth minute and completed his treble shortly after the half-hour. Steve Stone netted a late consolation goal for Villa.
Liverpool moved up to fifth place with seven points from four matches, leaving them two points behind leaders Newcastle United.
Aston Villa remained winless and dropped to 19th with two points from three matches.
