Jo and Richard Dunne struck inside the opening 20 minutes, and new signing Robinho, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Ched Evans and Gelson Fernandes were all on target in the second half.
Man City climbed to fifth in the table with nine points, while Portsmouth dropped to 13th with six points.

Leicester City fought back from 3-1 down to secure a stunning victory over Manchester United at King Power Stadium.
Man Utd went 2-0 up inside the opening 16 minutes after goals from Robin van Persie and Angel Di Maria.
Leonardo Ulloa immediately hit back for the hosts, but Ander Herrera restored United's two-goal advantage just before the hour-mark.
However, Leicester scored four times in a row to stun the visitors.
David Nugent's penalty was followed two minutes later by an Esteban Cambiasso equaliser and Jamie Vardy then put the Foxes ahead in the 79th minute.
Ulloa wrapped up the victory soon after, converting Leicester's second spot-kick of the match, while Tyler Blackett was sent off for United.
Nigel Pearson's side climbed to seventh in the table with eight points, leaving them five places and three points ahead of Man United.
