Bassala Sambou's fourth-minute penalty was the decisive goal at Goodison Park.

The Toffees were also boosted by James McCarthy's first competitive appearance since a double leg break in January.

Despite Mason Holgate's late red card, Everton are two points clear of second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion.

Man City are in seventh position, five points adrift of Everton.
