Gylfi Sigurdsson has developed a reputation for scoring with stunning strikes from long range, so it was appropriate that his 50th Premier League goal was a 25-yard rocket.
Indeed the Everton midfielder feels his decisive strike in this month’s 2-1 win at Leicester City, which came after a brilliant Cruyff turn to give him the space to shoot, was among his very best.
"It’s fantastic, a great achievement [to reach 50] and it’s one of my favourite goals," says Sigurdsson, after receiving a Milestone award from the Premier League, in association with Cadbury.
“I was going to pass backwards but then I took a chance and turned. I saw a bit of space and thought ‘why not? I’ll have a go at goal’. It was nice to see it in the back of the net.
“There’s many very good goalscorers and players that have scored 50 or more in the Premier League so I’m happy to be in that club.”
Sigurdsson, who has struck PL goals for Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, has no intention of settling for a half-century.
“Hopefully it’s not my last goal in the Premier League,” he says. “Someone asked me after the goal if I was looking forward to getting another Milestone. I said I’ve only got another 50 to go now!
“There’s still a long, long way to go but you never know what will happen. Hopefully I’ll get a few more.”
