Sunderland secured their first point of the season as they drew 1-1 with Southampton at Saint Mary’s.
The visitors took the lead when Jermain Defoe won and scored a penalty after being brought down by Jose Fonte with 12 minutes remaining.
The Black Cats' lead didn’t last long though as substitute Jay Rodriguez equalised five minutes later following a mistake by Jordan Pickford in the Southampton goal.
The Sunderland goalkeeper had made a number of good saves but was left distraught when Rodriguez’s low strike from outside the area squirmed under his body.
Both sides pushed for a late winner but had to settle for a point each.
