Miguel Britos headed a second-half winner for Watford against Sunderland.
Sunderland started brightly and Adnan Januzaj’s shot was saved by Heurelho Gomes after just nine minutes.
But Jordan Pickford was the busier goalkeeper in the first half, saving from M’Baye Niang and Craig Cathcart, while Etienne Capoue shot wide.
Younes Kaboul went off with a hamstring problem but Watford shook it off to score.
The winner came from Tom Cleverley's corner on 59 minutes, as Cathcart headed it back across goal and Britos nodded in.
Isaac Success could have doubled the lead, but the score ended 1-0 with Watford up to 12th on 34 points.
David Moyes’s side remain bottom, on 20 points, seven off safety .
