Allan Saint-Maximin scored the only goal as Newcastle United beat Southampton and leapfrogged their hosts in the table.
Southampton played most of the match with 10 men after the 28th-minute dismissal of Moussa Djenepo.
The Mali international was sent off for serious foul play on Isaac Hayden, with Graham Scott showing a red card after watching the incident in the Referee Review Area.
Southampton were grateful to goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, who kept out Matt Ritchie’s penalty after making an early triple save.
The hosts almost took the lead themselves, with Shane Long being denied by Martin Dubravka.
But Saint-Maximin scored a 79th-minute winner at the other end, dispossessing Yan Valery to score his second league goal of the season and Newcastle’s first in over seven hours of football.
A first win in six matches lifts Newcastle to 13th on 35 points. Southampton drop one place to 14th.
