Theo Walcott tested Lukasz Fabianski with a dipping effort from range on 62 minutes before West Ham had two chances of their own to win the match.
Tomas Soucek's tame header was saved by Alex McCarthy, before the Saints goalkeeper denied substitute Said Benrahma with a fine close-range save five minutes from time.
Southampton stay ninth with 26 points, having ended a run of five straight league defeats to the Hammers.
West Ham are three points and a place back going into the new year.
