A late red card for Michail Antonio compounded a frustrating day for West Ham United as they were held 0-0 by a Southampton side inspired by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
There were few clear-cut chances in the first half, until Valentino Livramento's right-wing cross forced West Ham's Lukasz Fabianski to tip the ball over.
Antonio almost put the visitors ahead on 48 minutes, but his well-struck shot was kept out by McCarthy.
West Ham were again thwarted by McCarthy, who stopped Jarrod Bowen and Craig Dawson in quick succession.
Saints substitute Armando Broja twice came close to scoring, striking the post, before having an effort cleared off the line.
West Ham's day got worse when they were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time, as Antonio was shown a second yellow card and will miss the home match with Manchester United.
Southampton drop to 14th on three points, while West Ham fall to sixth, with eight points.
