Roy Hodgson's reign as Watford manager began with a 0-0 draw and their first clean sheet of the season against relegation rivals Burnley at Turf Moor.
Burnley had the best opportunities in the early stages, with Ben Foster saving from Maxwel Cornet before Erik Pieters' goalbound volley was deflected wide.
Watford nearly broke through just before half-time, when a header from Joao Pedro was inadvertently turned towards his own net by Ben Mee before Aaron Lennon cleared off the line.
Wout Weghorst almost marked his Burnley debut with the opening goal a minute after the break, but his strike deflected off Hassane Kamara and looped on to the crossbar.
Pedro forced a fine save from Nick Pope on the hour mark, while at the other end, Cornet again tested Foster.
Watford pressed for a late winner, but Tom Cleverley was denied by Pope with five minutes remaining.
Burnley's 10th draw of 2021/22 leaves them bottom of the table on 13 points but they have two matches in hand on Watford, who move up to 18th with 15 points.
