Jonjo Shelvey’s second-half free-kick moved Newcastle United to within a point of safety as they beat Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road.
Leeds controlled possession throughout and went close on 11 minutes when Dan James’ shot was well saved by Martin Dubravka.
Newcastle almost went ahead through Shelvey’s 29th-minute shot that was kept out by a strong save from Illan Meslier.
The visitors lost Joelinton to injury and were grateful to Dubravka again after the break as he kept out Robin Koch’s drive.
Shelvey won the match for Newcastle on 75 minutes when his low free-kick beat Meslier and arrowed into the far corner.
Meslier denied Newcastle a second goal in stoppage time when he kept out Joe Willock's shot.
Newcastle’s second win of the season, and their first away from home, lifts them above Watford to 18th with 15 points, seven behind Leeds, who are 15th after a first defeat in three.
