Newcastle United ended Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the season as Anthony Gordon’s scrappy goal in the 64th minute was enough to secure the Magpies the win at a raucous St James’ Park.
How the match unfolded
After a first half where there were more bookings than shots on target, the opening goal came midway through the second half in bizarre circumstances. Substitute Joe Willock chased a loose cross and just prevented it from going out.
The former Arsenal midfielder crossed over the head of goalkeeper David Raya for Joelinton to head the ball down and Anthony Gordon scrambled the ball home.
After a long VAR check, looking to see firstly whether the ball had stayed in play, whether Gordon was offside or whether Joelinton had committed a foul, the goal was finally confirmed to ignite St. James’ Park once more.
Arsenal took over and dominated possession in search of an equaliser but were unable even to fashion a shot on target as Newcastle’s workrate made them the first team to shut out Mikel Arteta's side this season.
Arsenal missed the chance to go level with Manchester City at the top of the table and fall to third with 24 points. Newcastle are sixth with 20 points.
