Luka Milivojevic’s 81st-minute penalty gave Crystal Palace all three points against Newcastle United and moved them closer to safety.
Roy Hodgson’s men edged a tight match at St James’ Park with Milivojevic scoring from the spot after DeAndre Yedlin’s foul on Wilfried Zaha.
Both sides had first-half goals disallowed, with Newcastle's Salomon Rondon and Palace's James Tomkins denied by offside decisions.
Newcastle went close through a header on 53 minutes from Florian Lejeune, who later was carried off with a knee injury.
But it was Palace who made the breakthrough through Milivojevic's 10th penalty of the season.
The Eagles move up to 12th place with 39 points, 11 clear of Cardiff City in 18th.
Newcastle drop a place to 15th on 35 points.
