1997: Manchester United 6-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Manchester United followed up their 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley with another demolition as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 6-1. 

First-half goals from Teddy Sheringham, a Jon Newsome own goal, Andrew Cole and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put United in a commanding position going into the break. 

Sheringham scored his second before Guy Whittingham struck Sheffield Wednesday’s only goal of the match. Solskjaer scored again to round off the victory for United, who extended their unbeaten run to four matches.

The result left United top of the table on 28 points, putting four points between themselves and second-placed Arsenal. Sheffield Wednesday were bottom of the table on nine points, three points from safety.

2014: Newcastle United 1-0 Liverpool

Newcastle United recorded their third successive victory with a 1-0 win over Liverpool at St James’ Park. 

Ayoze Perez scored the only goal as Liverpool failed to score for a second straight league match. 

Victory moved Newcastle up to 12th with 13 points, while the result left Liverpool in seventh on 14 points.
