Steven Gerrard has announced his retirement from professional football.

“I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy," a statement from the former Liverpool midfielder read.

“I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be."

Gerrard first confirmed the news in an interview with BT Sport on Thursday morning.

He left Anfield and the Premier League at the end of 2014/15 to spend two seasons at LA Galaxy.

One of only 12 players to surpass 500 appearances in the Premier League, Gerrard made his debut for Liverpool in November 1998 against Blackburn Rovers and spent 17 seasons at Anfield.

He won Premier League Player of the Month award six times.

He scored 120 Premier League goals, the second-most of a midfielder in the competition’s history, and his 92 assists rank him behind only Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas, Frank Lampard and Dennis Bergkamp.
