The Scout looks at the Fantasy Premier League potential of summer signings ahead of the 2020/21 season.
Timo Werner (CHE) £9.5m
The 24-year-old arrives at Chelsea on the back of a prolific season for German side RB Leipzig.
Werner’s 28 goals were second only to the 34 of Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga.
Although Werner is versatile and capable of playing on the left wing, he is expected to occupy the lone striker role in Chelsea's 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formations.
Werner v Chelsea forwards 2019/20
Player | Apps | Goals | Assists | Mins per goal/assist |
---|---|---|---|---|
Werner | 34 | 28 | 8 | 78.0 |
Abraham | 34 | 15 | 6 | 105.8 |
Giroud | 18 | 8 | 1 | 111.0 |
Werner’s underlying statistics look very encouraging when assessed against his strike rivals, Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud.
The three were very similar for minutes per shot last season.
Werner’s average of 22.8 minutes was slightly quicker than the 25.2 of Abraham and 25.6 of Giroud.
However, Werner found the net at a far quicker rate, scoring every 100.3 minutes.
By comparison, Abraham and Giroud averaged a goal every 148.1 and 124.9 minutes respectively.
Werner's first week at Chelsea
Werner also had a significant edge when it came to creativity.
Indeed, his average of 52.9 minutes per key pass was more than twice as quick as the 106 of Abraham and 125 of Giroud
The arrival of Werner and playmaker Hakim Ziyech adds to the exciting options available to FPL managers at Chelsea this season.
Christian Pulisic will also be a big draw having averaged 5.1 points per match in his debut 2019/20 campaign.
But if Werner is handed spot-kicks, his all-round potential can help him emerge as the Blues' go-to pick.
