Manchester City midfielder James McAtee has been named the Premier League 2 Player of the Season for 2021/22.
The 19-year-old scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in 23 matches to help his club win the PL2 Division 1 title.
It is the second successive season in which a Man City player has won the award, after striker Liam Delap claimed the accolade last term.
“I just want to thank everyone who’s voted for me for this award," said McAtee. "I’m really happy. I’m over the moon. I’d like to thank my team-mates and the staff for a great season.”
Stepping up to senior level
McAtee's form has earned him first-team opportunities under Pep Guardiola.
He has featured twice in the Premier League this season, coming on as a substitute against Everton and Norwich City.
The teenager has also appeared in four other senior matches, in the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.
McAtee was chosen as the winner by a panel of the Premier League Football Development Department ahead of seven other nominees: Conor Bradley (Liverpool), Tom Dickson-Peters (Norwich), Sonny Hilton (Fulham), Abu Kamara (Norwich), Dilan Markanday (Tottenham Hotspur), Kazeem Olaigbe (Southampton) and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi (Crystal Palace).
Past winners
The previous winners of the PL2 Player of the Season were Delap, Curtis Jones of Liverpool in 2019/20, Brighton & Hove Albion's Aaron Connolly in 2018/19, Arsenal's Reiss Nelson in 2017/18 and Oliver McBurnie, now of Sheffield United, in 2016/17 with Swansea City.
