In their first match since head coach Steve Cooper signed a new three-year contract, Forest took the lead on 15 minutes as Dennis nodded in from Morgan Gibbs-White's free-kick.
Villa responded just seven minutes later when Ashley Young struck a superb half-volley from 25 yards beyond Dean Henderson.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the second half, but neither managed to find a breakthrough.
Villa extend their unbeaten run to four matches and are 16th on nine points.
A first point in six matches means Forest move above Leicester City into 19th, with five points.
