Three of the six top-scoring players in 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League are set to battle for the captaincy in Double Gameweek 34.

Sides with two fixtures
Team DGW34
Brighton WOL (H), MUN (H)
Fulham MCI (H), LIV (A)
Liverpool TOT (H), FUL (H)
Man City FUL (A), WHU (H)
Man Utd AVL (H), BHA (A)
West Ham CRY (A), MCI (A)

Erling Haaland (£12.3m), Marcus Rashford (£7.1m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) all play twice, with the Manchester City forward expected to be the most-selected armband pick due to his huge 81 per cent ownership.

Top-scoring DGW34 players, last four matches
Pts  Player G A
49 De Bruyne 3 5
44 Haaland 6 2
32 Jota 4 1
32 Grealish 2 3
30 Rashford 2 2
28 Salah 4 0

Haaland’s appeal is further strengthened by his recent form.

He is the second top-scoring player in Fantasy over his last four matches, earning 44 points thanks to six goals and two assists.

His eight goal involvements is twice the total of both Rashford and Salah, while the Man City star is the only one of that trio not to blank in that run.

Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m) was also involved in eight goals and collected 49 points, highlighting his potential as another alternative for Man City’s meetings with Fulham and West Ham United.

Top-scoring DGW34 players since GW17
Pts Player G A Pts per start
124 Rashford 12 4 7.9
118 Haaland 15 5 7.4
107 Salah 10 4 6.2
100 March 7 6 6.3
93 Mitoma 6 5 5.8
88 De Bruyne 4 8 6.6
86 Grealish 4 8 5.1

Since the season resumed, however, Rashford has proven more than a match for Haaland.

They are the best performing players in Fantasy from Gameweek 17 onwards, producing 124 and 118 points respectively.

Notably, Haaland is the only forward among the top-scoring Double Gameweek 34 players during this period, with a host of midfielders delivering strong performances.

While Salah ranks third among the Double Gameweek players on 107 points, his average of 6.2 points per start was surpassed by the 6.3 of Brighton & Hove Albion winger Solly March (£5.3m).

Meanwhile, Jack Grealish’s (£7.3m) consistency of starts has helped him match the four goals and eight assists of team-mate De Bruyne

Another factor which could influence the captaincy outcome is each side’s schedule.

Whereas both Manchester clubs have one home match and one away match, Liverpool and Brighton each have two home fixtures.

Salah v Mitoma v March since GW17
Home       Away
Player G A Pts per match A Pts per match
Salah 6 2 8.1 4 2 4.5
Mitoma 4 3 7.4 2 3 4.6
March 4 2 6.0 3 4 6.4

In the case of Salah and Kaoru Mitoma (£5.6m), this could be particularly significant.

Salah has averaged 8.1 points per match (ppm) at Anfield since the season resumed, compared with only 4.5 ppm on the road.

Mitoma’s 7.4 ppm at Amex Stadium is also markedly superior to his 4.6ppm on the road from Gameweek 17.

His team-mate March has been far more consistent, with 6.0ppm at home and 6.4ppm in away matches.

Salah’s potential for huge hauls, added to his schedule and penalty duties, indicates he is the best alternative to Haaland.

Nonetheless, the Man City forward heads into DGW34 in irresistible form.

Haaland has produced three successive double-figure hauls for the first time in his prolific debut campaign, making the armband call a relatively straightforward one.
