The penalty by Patrick Bamford that was saved by Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope was the second time this season the Leeds United forward had failed to convert from the spot.

But Bamford is in good company in terms of struggling from the spot this season. Wilfried Zaha has also missed both of his penalties for Crystal Palace, while Mohamed Salah and James Ward-Prowse have each missed two of four spot-kicks.

The overall conversion rate of penalties is at a five-season low. Of the 94 penalties taken in the Premier League season, 16 have been saved and seven missed.

The conversion rate of 75.5 per cent this campaign is the lowest since the 2017/18 season when it was 70 per cent.

Only in five seasons has the conversion rate from the penalty spot been worse in the competition.

Pope's penalty double

Of the 23 penalties out of 93 missed, seven have either missed the goal, as Bamford’s did in a 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal in October, or hit its frame. A further 16 have been saved.

The miss rate of 7.5 per cent is the second highest in six seasons, while the save rate of 17.2 per cent (16 out of 92) has been exceeded only once in the past five campaigns.

Pope’s save was the second he had made this season, joining Dean Henderson and Jose Sa in that feat.

The only players with a 100 per cent record from the spot, taking a minimum of three, are Said Benrahma (four) and Erling Haaland (seven).
