Who are the best mid-priced and premium FPL midfielders?

The Scout's panel of Fantasy Premier League experts reveal who they will be picking from Manchester City for the start of the 2023/24 season.

Sam Bonfield (@FPLFamily)

Some will argue Erling Haaland (£14.0m) has underwhelmed in pre-season. However, we all saw last season what he is capable of. I expect him to deliver more of the same.

Outside of Haaland I am struggling to invest in Man City. John Stones (£5.5m) looks the best pick if you want a Man City defender, however in midfield as always it is tougher. Phil Foden (£7.5m) drew a lot of hype from FPL managers but his Community Shield benching will dampen that somewhat. So I think I am going into Gameweek 1 with Haaland as my only Man City asset.

Mark McGettigan (@FPLGeneral

Haaland will be my auto-captain until there's a good enough reason not to, like injury or rotation. Stones and Ruben Dias (£5.5m) are under consideration too. I'm not ruling Ederson (£5.5m) out just yet! I think I'll avoid the midfield roulette to begin with.

Ali Jahangirov (@FPLGunz)

With Haaland locked in for the vast majority of FPL managers, having two more players from City is the only way to benefit from their great run of fixtures. For me it will most likely be Foden and Stones. Even though Foden was benched in the Community Shield, I believe he will have a great season.

I had three Man City players going into the Community Shield and now I only have one - Haaland of course. Foden left due to the increased concern of his rotation coming to life with a benching. Stones also left because with Joao Cancelo (£6.0m) or in this case Kyle Walker (£5.0m) in the starting line-up, his forward runs were minimal.

Lee Bonfield (@FPLFamily)

Haaland stays, but I'm starting to go a little cold on adding any more Man City assets alongside him. Foden's been in most of my drafts, but James Maddison's performance against Shakhtar Donetsk is swaying me towards including him as my £7.5m midfielder of choice.

Pras (@Pras_FPL)

Despite not starting Sunday's match, I am still optimistic on Foden's prospects this season. He just needs some adjustment period of playing more through the middle, therefore I am happy to wait on him. If Kevin De Bruyne (£10.5m) is fully fit, I am also tempted but happy to wait on him. The one I will likely pair with Haaland in my XI is Stones. Him and Dias look most assured for minutes.

I really like Stones as a second City option for clean-sheet potential, after Haaland up top. Either Dias or Stones are decent defensive picks even with Josko Gvardiol (£5.0m) coming into the fold. I wouldn't read too much into Stones playing high as it won't always be the case. The third option would be Foden, but the minutes risk is something I believe would be better to wait on and monitor.

Gianni Buttice (@GianniButtice)

I still think this is the best defence in the league and covering that backline is where the smart money is. Haaland is a lock and despite the benching I am still tempted by Foden, who I back to play in most the easier fixtures.

Nick Harris (@WGTA_Nick)

I won't be changing Haaland from my team. He will have the armband for Gameweek 1. Currently I do not have defensive coverage but that is something to consider over the next few days. Foden looks like he may have another frustrating time not getting selected so is out of consideration for now.

Holly Shand (@HollyShand)

Pep roulette will be a nightmare again this season. Haaland is obviously a lock but winning the minutes game with the rest of their attackers is tough. Foden was on my watchlist but feels like an avoid for now. Any likely double-up on Man City now will involve Stones in defence to take advantage of their kind opening fixtures.

Ben Crabtree (@FC_CrabDogg)

I'd like to go for three Man City players but after Haaland and Stones I'm only comfortable with De Bruyne, and he's too expensive. Foden or Jack Grealish (£7.5m) are options but I prefer safer minutes elsewhere.

Utkarsh Dalmia (@ZopharFPL)

Haaland was always a lock but I was impressed with how far forward Stones got in the Community Shield, and he almost scored from a header as well. I will likely go with him alongside the Norwegian but likely no more with rotation likely in the other positions.
