Marcus Tavernier and Justin Kluivert’s first Premier League goals of the season earned AFC Bournemouth a 3-1 win against Sheffield United, their first away victory of the campaign.

Tavernier produced a brace either side of Kluivert's goal before Oli McBurnie scored a consolation goal in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time.

How the match unfolded

Bournemouth went in front in the 12th minute through Tavernier, who was slipped in by Antoine Semenyo before slotting past Wes Foderingham

In the third minute of first-half stoppage time Bournemouth doubled their lead after a terrible mistake by Foderingham. The Sheff Utd goalkeeper rushed out of his net, but was dispossessed by Kluivert, who placed his shot into an empty net.

It was the Dutchman’s first goal in the Premier League, making him only the second player to score in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga, after Stevan Jovetic.

Bournemouth's third came when Adam Smith’s cross to the back post was finished off by Tavernier. The midfielder ghosted past Oliver Norwood and produced a fine side-footed finish for his second of the match in the 51st minute.

Bournemouth nearly had a fourth when Semenyo drove with the ball into the Sheff Utd box and unleashed a low driven shot that fell into the path of Dominic Solanke, who missed from close range.

Sheff Utd tried to mount a comeback but were unsuccessful as a header from substitute McBurnie and a shot from William Osula were comfortably saved by Neto.

However, the Blades were able to grab a late consolation goal from McBurnie's back-post header.

Bournemouth, who have now won three of their last four matches, are 16th and seven points clear of 18th-placed Sheff Utd.

Did you know?

Sheffield United have conceded 34 goals in the Premier League this season, the most by a side after 13 matches in a top flight campaign since Barnsley (36) and Sheffield Wednesday (35) both in 1997-98.

Bournemouth secured their first away Premier League win since a 1-0 win at Southampton in April, winning an away top-flight game by two or more goals for the first time since July 2020 (3-1 at Everton).

Sheffield United have failed to win any other their last 17 Premier League games when starting the day off the bottom of the table (D2 L15). Indeed, each of their last eight top-flight wins have come when they’ve been rooted to the bottom.
