With the second Wildcard available to all Fantasy Premier League managers, The Scout's panel of experts are here to give you the best advice on when to play the chip.

Usually, I save my second Wildcard for a big Double Gameweek, which usually comes around Gameweek 34 or 37. But this season we might see some earlier Doubles, with Manchester City, Brentford, Luton Town and AFC Bournemouth already having matches to be rearranged. If a Double Gameweek drops unexpectedly, I am not opposed to using my Wildcard around Gameweek 25. It's also perfectly viable to use it to get Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) and Son Heung-min (£9.8m) back if you have spread your funds too thinly across your squad.

With most FPL managers likely having a reasonable strategy over the next few weeks to deal with Salah and Son being absent - and to get Erling Haaland (£13.9m) back - I don't see the Wildcard being needed any time soon, unless you're missing a host of players through injury too. I'll likely wait on more information around Double Gameweeks, as well as waiting for the January transfer window to close, before welcoming any new options.

My plan with the second Wildcard is usually to hold on to it as long as possible and integrate the usage of it alongside the other chips allowing me to maximise the Blank and Double Gameweeks later in the season. However I may be tempted to use it sooner than planned when Salah and Son return from international duty as I may struggle to balance my squad to accommodate them.

The second Wildcard is one of the chips I value most. It is critical for setting your team up in the final weeks of the season, including for the all important Double Gameweeks. I never like to play the chip while the transfer window is open, as there is too much risk and potential for players arriving and leaving the league. Normally I hold the chip until around Gameweek 25 to allow me to target the final month or two of the season.
