Newcastle United showed the gulf in class between them and Sunderland, winning the Tyne-Wear derby 3-0 at the Stadium of Light in the third round of the FA Cup.

They were one of six Premier League teams to progress in the competition on Saturday.

Alexander Isak scored twice after a Dan Ballard own goal gave Newcastle a first-half lead.

Newcastle made two changes from their defeat to Liverpool on Monday, with Kieran Trippier returning to the side in place of Tino Livramento while Miguel Almiron started instead of Lewis Miley.

Eddie Howe's side had lost seven of their last eight matches and after a tightly contested opening 30 minutes, Ballard broke the deadlock when he turned the ball into his own net from Joelinton's cross.

Less than a minute after half-time a defensive error was capitalised on by Almiron, who squared the ball to Isak for a simple finish. Isak then added his second from the penalty spot in the 90th minute after Anthony Gordon had been brought down.

Newcastle will hope this win provides a springboard for better results in the Premier League as they take on Manchester City next Saturday at St James' Park.

Villa strike late to beat Middlesbrough

Matty Cash scored in the 87th minute to give Aston Villa a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Championship side Middlesbrough.

Unai Emery's side were made to work for the win as they secured their first FA Cup victory since 2016.

Cash was one of four changes as he, Boubacar Kamara, Leander Dendoncker and Jhon Duran came into the side.

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tom Glover was in inspired form all evening as he denied Duran twice and captain John McGinn.

Ezri Konsa also struck a post before Cash ensured that there would be no replay after his effort from outside the box took a big deflection and beat Glover.

Villa are next in action on Sunday 14 January as they face Everton with the chance to move joint-level with league leaders Liverpool.

Bournemouth survive scare to win

AFC Bournemouth recovered from 2-0 down to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2 at Loftus Road.

Andoni Iraola made seven changes to the side that lost to Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday, with only Marcus Tavernier, Marcos Senesi, Lewis Cook, and Luis Sinisterra retaining their places in the starting XI.

QPR led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals in the space of two minutes from Sinclair Armstrong and Lyndon Dykes.

But Iraola's side produced an excellent reaction after the break and halved the deficit through Tavernier's deflected effort before Kieffer Moore's header brought the Cherries level.

Substitute Justin Kluivert completed the turnaround in the 69th minute and Tavernier nearly scored his second of the match when his free-kick stuck the crossbar as Bournemouth book their place in the fourth round.

Bournemouth will look to continue their fine form on Sunday 21 January as they welcome Liverpool to Vitality Stadium in the Premier League.

Joao Pedro stars for Brighton

Joao Pedro scored twice as Brighton & Hove Albion came from behind to beat Stoke City 4-2 away.

The Seagulls trailed most of the first half to Jan Paul van Hecke's own goal, but Pervis Estupinan equalised in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time.

Lewis Dunk put Brighton in front but then conceded a penalty for handball that Lewis Baker converted to bring Stoke level.

However Joao Pedro had the final say as he scored a brace to move up to 15 goals for the season and seal Brighton's place into the next round.

Brighton are next in action on Monday 22 January as they welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

Sheff Utd win first away match of the season

Sheffield United secured their first away win of the season in style as they dispatched League Two side Gillingham 4-0 thanks to braces from William Osula and James McAtee.

Osula scored in the 14th minute when he drove at the Gillingham defence before firing through the legs of goalkeeper Jake Turner for his first goal for the club.

The 20-year-old then netted again when he reacted quickly after Turner had palmed Cameron Archer's shot back into a dangerous area.

McAtee put the contest to bed in the 83rd minute when he capitalised on a mix-up at the back to score from close range and he then added his second four minutes later with a swerving effort from the edge of the box.

Sheff Utd will hope this victory provides them with the confidence they need to retain their top-flight status as they take on West Ham United on Sunday 21 January.

Chelsea secure third straight win

Four second-half goals from Chelsea sealed their place in the next round of the FA Cup as they eased past Championship side Preston North End 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Armando Broja opened the scoring in the 58th minute with a superb header from Malo Gusto's left-wing cross before an unmarked Thiago Silva headed in eight minutes later.

Raheem Sterling then produced a dipping 20-yard free-kick to make it 3-0 and Enzo Fernandez got the final goal which was confirmed by a VAR review after he had been flagged as offside.
