Sunderland’s hopes of ending their season with a first Premier League International Cup crown were ended last night in a 5-0 defeat by Porto.
A crowd of 18,317 people turned out at the Stadium of Light to cheer on a side including Lynden Gooch and Donald Love, but Porto proved too strong, even affording themselves a penalty miss in a commanding performance.
The visitors led after six minutes when Galena curled a fine shot past Max Stryjek, who kept his side in the tie on 27 minutes when saving Joris Kayembe’s spot-kick.

Galena scored again eight minutes later and Andre Pereira struck on the stroke of half-time to put Porto in control.
Within 10 minutes of the restart Porto had scored twice more, Kayembe’s fierce shot and Chidozie Awaziem’s header rounding off a memorable evening.
