History has been made over the last three days, with the goals flying in like never before, setting a record for the number of strikes in a single Premier League Matchweek.

Phil Foden's hat-trick in Manchester City's 3-1 win against Brentford took the total to 45 goals across the 10 fixtures of Matchweek 23.

The previous record for goals scored across a round of 10 matches was 44. That total was achieved twice, firstly in Matchweek 2 of the 2020/21 season and then in Matchweek 34 of last season.

We have now had a huge 730 goals scored in just 228 matches this season.

The rate of 3.20 goals per match so far is putting 2023/24 on course to smash the record for the most goals scored in a single 380-match season by 42 goals.

The current record for a 38-match campaign was set last season, with 1,084 goals. If this season's current rate were maintained through to the end of May 2024, approximately 1,216 goals would be scored.

The most goals of any Premier League season came in the inaugural 42-match campaign, in 1992/93, when 1,222 goals were scored at a rate of 2.6 goals per match.

Record goals on a single day

Saturday's fixtures were a precursor for what was to happen as the goal record for a single day having five matches was set, with 26 scored.

The previous record of 24 goals on a five-match day had only been set on Sunday 3 December.

The day started with Everton and Tottenham Hotspur sharing four goals in the early kick-off.

Burnley and Fulham then did the same at Turf Moor, while there were five goals at the Amex Stadium as Brighton & Hove Albion hammered Crystal Palace 4-1.

The match of the day was at St James’ Park, where Newcastle United and Luton Town provided an eight-goal thriller, drawing 4-4.

Then Aston Villa got in on the act in the late match versus Sheffield United, racing into a four-goal lead inside 30 minutes en route to a 5-0 win.

Sunday began with three 14:00 GMT matches as Nottingham Forest came from a goal down to draw 1-1 at AFC Bournemouth.

Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers shared six goals at Stamford Bridge, the visitors leaving with a 4-2 win.

Manchester United cruised to a 3-0 success over West Ham United and in the biggest fixture of Matchweek 23, the 16:30 GMT kick-off between Arsenal and Liverpool ended with a 3-1 victory for Mikel Arteta's side.
