Alex Keble looks at what Crystal Palace need to do in the summer transfer window to improve their squad.
Crystal Palace
The Oliver Glasner revolution has been so quick and substantial that it is already difficult to find areas for improvement in the first XI.
There is an argument to be made that 33-year-old Nathaniel Clyne, playing as an overlapping centre-back in Glasner’s 3-4-3, is not a long-term solution.
Although that is something they may have resolved, after completing the signing of 20-year-old centre-back Chadi Riad.
Meanwhile, Will Hughes and Jefferson Lerma cannot quite match the quality that Adam Wharton brings to midfield.
Wharton averages 5.49 progressive passes per 90 minutes, well above Lerma (3.97) or Hughes (3.62), and his 3.33 tackles per 90 minutes is also superior to Hughes (2.90) and Lerma (1.57).
Unfortunately, the most significant business could be replacing either or both of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, who contributed a combined 31 goals or assists last season despite starting only half of Palace’s Premier League matches.
Key positions to target: Centre-back, central midfield
