Why rotating Palmer and Salah as captains could pay off in FPL

Ahead of the launch of 2024/25 Fantasy Premier League, see a list of player prices revealed so far, with analysis from The Scout.

Key price reveals so far
Erling Haaland (MCI) £15.0m (+£1.0m) FWD

The Norwegian forward is now the most-expensive player in FPL history, becoming the first EVER to be priced above £14.0m.

His 121 shots, 114 shots in the box, 55 big chances and 57 shots on target were all more than any other player last season.

He now has a massive price tag. But with his huge goal threat and captaincy potential, combined with a kind early fixture schedule, it poses the question: can you afford NOT to have Haaland in your opening squad?

Mohamed Salah (LIV) £12.5m MID

Although the Egyptian recorded his lowest-ever total in Fantasy last season, his 92 shots in the box, 33 big chances, 114 shots and 54 shots on target were all more than any other midfielder in Fantasy and he still recorded 200+ points for a seventh successive season.

Cole Palmer (CHE) £10.5m (+£5.5m) MID

Palmer produced 22 goals and 13 assists, despite not making his full debut for Chelsea until Gameweek 7 last season.

The midfielder’s incredible consistency meant he blanked only ONCE in his 13 starts at Stamford Bridge, while his 15 attacking returns in away matches were just two behind the league-high 17 of Ollie Watkins.

Phil Foden (MCI) £9.5m (+£2.0m) MID

Foden earns his biggest-ever opening price in Fantasy after claiming his career-high 230 points in 2023/24. Starting last season at a cost of £7.5m, the Man City midfielder produced 19 goals and eight assists to finish as the second top-scoring player in the game.

The price hike further adds to the fierce competition in the premium midfield bracket, with Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Cole Palmer (£10.5m) and Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) all vying for a place in managers’ squads. With Son Heung-min also likely to be added to that expensive price list, some big decisions will need to be made in midfield this season.

Ollie Watkins (AVL) £9.0m (+£1.0m) FWD

Villa’s very favourable run of opening opponents gives Watkins every chance of rivalling Haaland once again. According to the Fixture Difficulty Ratings (FDR), five of their first six matches score a mere two.

Bruno Fernandes (MUN) £8.5m MID

Man Utd’s playmaker will cost exactly the same as last campaign, when he enjoyed the second-best season of his Fantasy career for goal involvements by scoring 10 and assisting a further nine. Clashes with Fulham, Brighton and Southampton in the first four Gameweeks give Fernandes the chance to make a fast start to 2024/25.

Kai Havertz (ARS) £8.0m (+£0.5m) FWD

Havertz has been reclassified as a forward for 2024/25 Fantasy, having enjoyed a hugely successful second half to his debut campaign for Arsenal thanks to a move up front. The German was involved in a team-high 18 goals from Gameweek 21 onwards, with nine goals and nine assists highlighting his all-round style of play.

Jean-Philippe Mateta (CRY) £7.5m (+£2.5m) FWD

The Palace forward earns a 50 per cent price hike from last season’s £5.0m due to his displays under Crystal Palace’s new head coach Oliver Glasner. The Frenchman produced 13 goals and three assists to collect 105 points from Gameweek 25 onwards, more than any other forward in Fantasy.

Dominic Solanke (BOU) £7.5m (+£1.0m) FWD

Solanke significantly improved his goal threat in his first season under new head coach Andoni Iraola last season. The forward scored 19 goals – more than three times his previous-best tally –  and also supplied three assists to claim his career-high haul of 175 points. Solanke’s 97 shots in the box and 28 big chances were both more than double the total of any team-mate in 2023/24, highlighting his role as the focal point of the Cherries’ attack.

Ivan Toney (BRE) £7.5m (-£0.5m) FWD

Having dropped £0.5m in cost from last season, when he was suspended for half of the campaign, managers will be hoping Toney can rediscover his form of 2022/23. The Brentford star produced 20 goals, four assists and 182 points to finish as the third top-scoring forward that season, which was his last full season in Fantasy.

Luis Diaz (Liverpool) £7.5m

Luis Diaz remains at the same cost as last season, when he combined eight goals with seven assists to collect 142 points. If the Liverpool star can step up his output under new head coach Arne Slot, he could represent good value in Fantasy in 2024/25.

For now, though, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) remains the Reds’ go-to attacker after claiming his seventh successive 200+ point season last time around.

Anthony Gordon (NEW) £7.5m  (+£2.0m) MID

The Newcastle winger rises £2.0m in price on the back of his 11 goals, 16 assists and 183 points last season. The winger has the schedule to make an immediate impact in 2024/25, facing Southampton, AFC Bournemouth, Wolves and Fulham in the first five Gameweeks.

Jarrod Bowen (WHU) £7.5m (+£0.5m) MID

The West Ham winger enjoyed the best goalscoring season of his career last time out, netting 16 goals in addition to supplying six assists. The versatile West Ham winger could also feature up front in their first campaign under new head coach Julen Lopetegui.

Rasmus Hojlund (MUN) £7.0m FWD

Hojlund’s improved displays in the second half of last season offer plenty of encouragement for the campaign ahead. The striker produced all his attacking returns – 10 goals and two assists - from Gameweek 19 onwards, averaging 5.4 points per start over that period. Encounters with Fulham, Brighton and Southampton across the first four Gameweeks hand Hojlund the opportunity to maintain that upturn in output.

Eberechi Eze (CRY) £7.0m (+£0.5m) MID

Eze’s all-round style of play was instrumental to the Eagles’ improved displays under their new head coach Olivier Glasner. His 35 shots and 21 key passes were both team-leading totals after the Austrian arrived in Gameweek 25 last season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (LIV) £7.0m (-£1.0m) DEF

Despite his disappointing 2023/24 campaign, Alexander-Arnold’s 64 key passes and 18 big chances created were bettered only by Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) among team-mates. Both those totals, as well as his 47 shots, ranked among the top three defenders last term.

Christopher Nkunku (CHE) £6.5m (-£1.0m) MID

Reclassified from a forward to a midfielder in Fantasy, Nkunku will surely be far cheaper than his Chelsea team-mate Cole Palmer. If the Frenchman finds form under new head coach Enzo Maresca, the Blues’ kind early schedule could persuade some managers to double up on the midfield duo.

Leon Bailey (AVL) £6.5m (+£1.0m) MID

With Villa forward Watkins costing £9.0m this season, Bailey could provide better value as an option in midfield. He made 20 of his 22 starts last season from Gameweek 14 onwards, producing seven goals and eight assists. Bailey’s total of 109 points in that period was bettered only by the 143 of Watkins for Villa.

Alejandro Garnacho (Man Utd) £6.5m (+£1.5m) MID

Garnacho rises from £5.0m to £6.5m this season after establishing himself as a regular for the Red Devils in 2023/24. Seven goals and seven assists underline the Argentinian’s all-round prospects, with his totals of 100 shots and 81 shots in the box both placing among the top five midfielders. Having converted a mere seven per cent of his shots, though, it’s fair to say that Garnacho needs to improve his finishing.

Mohammed Kudus (WHU) £6.5m MID

At a cost of £6.5m, Kudus can challenge Jarrod Bowen (£7.5m) as West Ham’s most-popular attacker in 2024/25.

The Ghanaian delivered eight goals, nine assists and 137 points in his debut campaign for the Hammers last season. However, Kudus didn’t make his first start of 2023/24 until Gameweek 10 – and from that point onwards, he eclipsed Bowen by 125 points to 124.

Alexis Mac Allister (LIV) £6.5m (+£0.5m) MID

Mac Allister's improved output in the final months of his debut 2023/24 campaign for Liverpool suggests he could offer great value this time around. The Argentinian scored four of his five goals for the season, and supplied four of his five assists, from Gameweek 25 onwards.

Rodri (Man City) £6.5m (+£1.0m) MID

Rodri enjoyed the best-ever season of his Fantasy career in 2023/24, amassing 159 points thanks to eight goals and 10 assists.

The Man City midfielder’s combined tally of 18 goal involvements is TWICE the total of his previous-best campaign, when he produced seven goals and two assists in 2021/22 Fantasy.

Rodrigo Muniz (Fulham) £6.0m (+£1.5m) FWD

Muniz seized his first-team opportunity after replacing Raul Jimenez up front midway through the previous campaign. The Brazilian started all of Fulham’s 15 matches over Gameweeks 23-37, scoring nine goals and provided two assists. Muniz’s total of 84 points across that spell was at least 27 more than any team-mate and placed fourth among forwards in Fantasy.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (CHE) £6.0m MID

The midfielder combined 12 goals with 14 assists in the 2023/24 Championship, underlining his major all-round attacking potential as a double-up option alongside Palmer.

Josko Gvardiol (Man City) £6.0m (-£1.0m) DEF

Gvardiol climbs £1.0m in cost thanks to his fine end-of-season form in 2023/24. The Croat delivered all his attacking returns for the season – four goals and two assists – in Man City’s final 10 matches, in addition to five clean sheets.

Gvardiol’s 79 points was not only a team-leading total, it was also more than any other defender in Fantasy in that spell. His prospects at both ends of the pitch suggest he can build on that momentum and rival Arsenal assets as the top-scoring defender in 2024/25.

Kieran Trippier (Newcastle) £6.0m (-£0.5m) DEF

The Newcastle right-back failed to justify his hefty price tag of £6.5m last season, producing 111 points, compared with his 198 points in 2022/23, when he was the top-scoring defender in Fantasy.

Despite making only 28 appearances in 2023/24, Trippier still recorded 65 key passes and 13 big chances created – both those totals ranked second among all defenders.

Joao Pedro (BHA) £5.5m FWD

Joao Pedro had a somewhat lukewarm debut season for the Seagulls, amassing 104 points thanks to nine goals and three assists. However, it’s worth noting he only started 19 matches in Roberto De Zerbi’s final campaign in charge. If he secures a regular role for new head coach Fabian Hurzeler, the Brazilian could be one of the best-value forwards in Fantasy this season.

Adam Armstrong (Southampton) £5.5m FWD

Armstrong was the key attacker for Russell Martin’s side in the Championship last season. The forward was involved in 37 goals, scoring 24 and assisting a further 13.

Daichi Kamada (CRY) £5.5m MID

Kamada had the best goal scoring season of his career while playing for Glasner at Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022/23, producing nine goals and supplying six assists in 25 Bundesliga starts.

Pedro Porro (TOT) £5.5m (+£0.5m) DEF

Porro’s all-round attacking potential was realised by his total of three goals and eight assists last season. Indeed, that total of 11 attacking returns ranked joint-second among defenders in 2023/24.

The underlying numbers further highlight the Spurs full-back’s style of play – his 53 shots ranked top in his position in Fantasy, while his 51 key passes placed fifth.

Ian Maatsen (AVL) £5.0m DEF

Maatsen scored twice and supplied two assists in his 15 Bundesliga starts for Borussia Dortmund last season.

Jordan Pickford (EVE) £5.0m (+£0.5m) GKP

The Everton goalkeeper earned 29 save points and 22 bonus points in 2023/24, which is the combined equivalent of more than 12 clean sheets. Combined with his 13 shutouts, he totalled 153 points.

Ricardo Pereira (LEI) £4.5m DEF

The right-back's total of 45 key passes was bettered by just three other Leicester players last season. However, a change of manager, combined with a tough opening schedule, means managers should wait before investing in the Foxes’ key players under Steve Cooper in 2024/25.

Leif Davis (IPS) £4.5m DEF

Davis has one of the best-ever records of any promoted defender in Fantasy. The left-back produced two goals and 18 assists last season, with his set-piece duties helping him create an eye-catching 125 chances in the 2023/24 Championship.

Rayan Ait-Nouri (WOL) £4.5m DEF

From Gameweek 9, Ait-Nouri could establish himself as big value asset in defence. His raids down the left helped him score twice and supply three assists.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis (SOU) £4.0m DEF

The Southampton centre-back produced two goals and three assists last campaign and has a favourable early schedule to appeal as a rotation option at the back.
