The 2024/2025 Premier League season will kickoff with new updates, including those for denying clear goal-scoring opportunities.
As seen in previous seasons, when a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by committing a deliberate handball offence, the player is sent off wherever the offence occurs.
In addition to this, when a player now denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by committing a non-deliberate handball offence and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned.
Things to consider for denying a goal or clear goal-scoring opportunity are:
-Distance between the offence and the goal
-General direction of the play
-Likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
-Location and number of defenders
An offence committed outside the penalty area that denies a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity will be a red card.
A deliberate handball or foul, such as holding, pulling, or pushing, inside the penalty area will result in a penalty kick to the opposition and a red card to the offender.
A non-deliberate handball or foul, if the offence was an attempt to play the ball or challenge for the ball, will result in a penalty kick to the opposition and a yellow card to the offender.
