Alexander-Arnold takes Liverpool a step closer to title

Trent Alexander-Arnold admitted it was one of the best moments in his Liverpool career after scoring the goal that moved Arne Slot's Premier League leaders to within three points of winning the title.

The decisive strike in Liverpool's 1-0 win at now-relegated Leicester City was particularly sweet as the right-back had only just returned to action, as a 71st-minute substitute, after missing the previous three matches with an ankle problem.

"I was excited to be back," said Alexander-Arnold, in a post-match interview with Sky Sports. "I've done a lot of hard work over the last few weeks to get back fit. I was eager to play and I was happy to contribute with a goal, it was a big one. We are so close to winning the title now.

"I think it's one win away now. Very close. To do that, especially with the fans here, is a very, very special moment."

Alexander-Arnold stays quiet on new deal

Alexander-Arnold was one of three Liverpool stars whose contracts were due to expire at the end of this season, but is now the only one whose future remains the subject of speculation, after the announcement of new deals for Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

When asked how many special moments he could have left with his boyhood club, the No 66 replied: "I have said all season that I am not going to speak about my situation. I am not going to go into details.

"But days like today are always special. Scoring goals, playing, winning games, being close to winning titles and being in title races.

"They are special moments that will live with me for ever and I am glad to be a part of them."

'Liverpool supporters have pushed us every game'

Liverpool captain van Dijk noticeably pushed Alexander-Arnold towards the ecstatic away fans after full-time at King Power Stadium.

"He pushed me to the front to soak it in," the goalscorer admitted. "The fans have been outstanding again this season.

"They have pushed us in every game until the final minute and they've done that again today, they've helped us win the game. We can see them all now celebrating.

"As much as we do it for ourselves, we do it for the fans as well. They're the ones that travel to the games and spend their money to come and watch us play so the least they deserve is to see us give 100 per cent on the pitch.

"To be so close to sealing for some of us a second title, but a first league title in front of the fans is something very special."

A reminder of Liverpool's last title win

Alexander-Arnold also scored in an important away victory at Leicester when Liverpool were last crowned champions, winning that first Premier League title, in 2019/20.

Jurgen Klopp's side won 4-0 at King Power Stadium to go 13 points clear on Boxing Day in 2019, with Alexander-Arnold grabbing the fourth and final goal to the delight of the travelling fans.

"I've had a few good moments in this stadium, to be honest. I've scored a few goals here," he said today.

"[This feels] very similar indeed. And I am pretty sure this [goal today] is my first left-foot goal in my career as well.

"It's taken me a few years, but I got there in the end. It was probably the one type of goal that I've been missing, but I've saved it for the right time."
