A stunning goal from Brice Dja Djedje helped Watford defeat Southampton 2-1 in their opening Group B Premier League Cup fixture.
Michael Folivi put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot after 23 minutes at Staplewood Training Ground.
It could have been 1-1 but Marcus Barnes was had his penalty saved by Hornets goalkeeper Nathan Gartside.
Watford made it 2-0 on 65 minutes when Dja Djedje struck from 20 yards before Callum Slattery reduced the deficit with Southampton's second spot kick.
Southampton's next Group B opponents are Watford on Thursday 2 November with Watford hosting Blackburn Rovers the following Monday.
