Jack Roles scored the winner as relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur earned a 1-0 victory over Division 1 leaders Liverpool, who finished with nine men at Stevenage.
England international Adam Lallana and George Johnston were both dismissed for the visitors as Spurs stayed in touch with their rivals.
The visitors also started with first teamers Danny Ings, Dominic Solanke and Ben Woodburn, but were unable to cancel out Roles' 55th-minute strike.
Lallana was sent off for his reaction to George Marsh's challenge and Johnston collected a second yellow card late on.
Spurs are a point behind Sunderland with a match in hand, while Liverpool are now only one point ahead of second-placed Arsenal.
