Burnley v Liverpool preview

Arsenal v Liverpool - Premier League

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he "has no idea" if Sadio Mane will be fit to play at Turf Moor after sustaining a shoulder injury in training this week.

Mane is doubtful but Daniel Sturridge and James Milner have returned to full training after sitting out the 4-3 win at Arsenal. Lucas Leiva, meanwhile, has stepped up his recovery from a hamstring issue and could be available.

Club-record signing Steven Defour could be in line for a Burnley debut but the match comes too early for Ashley Barnes (hamstring), while Jon Flanagan is ineligible to play against his parent club.

Did you know?

Burnley have never scored a Premier League goal against Liverpool, losing all four of their previous encounters with the Reds.

Liverpool’s 100% win record against the Clarets is one they hold against only two other teams in PL history (also Cardiff City and AFC Bournemouth).

Burnley’s last home win over Liverpool in the league came in September 1974. They last scored against the Reds in match 1975 and haven’t found the net in six matches since.

Simon Mignolet could make his 200th PL appearance in this match, becoming the third Belgian to reach the milestone after Marouane Fellaini (203) and Vincent Kompany (220).

What the managers say

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: “In the game against Arsenal they were very good and as the game grew they got stronger and adapted to what the manager wants from them it seems.

“He (Klopp) spoke heavily about getting on the press and playing with tempo. It’s a style I personally like very much and it’s something we’ve done here.

“We’ll have to play well and I thought we did last week against Swansea but they’re the fine margins in the Premier League sometimes."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on team selection: “We need to work, every player needs to work and be available and then I have to make decisions, that’s how it is. Show me your best and I will make decisions. The most comfortable situation for me would be that the decisions are really difficult to make.

“It’s pretty possible, and hopefully it stays like this, that I have to make on Friday really difficult decisions because no-one has given me a sign that they don’t want to be involved. That’s a manager’s life.”
