1998: Alan Thompson moves to Aston Villa
Aston Villa signed Alan Thompson after an impressive campaign for Bolton Wanderers.
The Trotters were relegated on the final day of 1997/98, but Thompson still managed nine goals and six assists from midfield.
Thompson’s five years at Bolton included two promotions to the top flight.
The midfielder made 46 Premier League appearances in his two seasons at Aston Villa, scoring four goals and setting up eight more. He left Villa for Celtic in September 2000.
2013: Roberto Martinez appointed Everton manager
Everton announced Wigan Athletic’s Roberto Martinez as their manager.
The Spaniard led Wigan to their first major trophy the previous month, beating Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final.
Martinez spent four years at Wigan, which ended in relegation from the Premier League despite their cup win.
Everton finished fifth and gained a club-record total of 72 points in Martinez’s debut season, pushing Arsenal close as they fell just short of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
Martinez left Everton in May 2016 after three years at Goodison Park. He was appointed as Belgium’s head coach in August that year.
