West Bromwich Albion scored twice in seven first-half minutes to wrap up a comfortable victory which left Sunderland at the bottom of the table.
Darren Fletcher opened the scoring with a crisp volley and Chris Brunt doubled the lead with a fierce shot from 20 yards.
David Moyes’ side had slipped to the bottom after Swansea City’s earlier win at Liverpool but apart from two half-chances for Jermain Defoe, created little in the first half.
Patrick van Aanholt’s deflected shot was well saved by Ben Foster after the break before West Brom’s new signing Jake Livermore, on as a substitute, almost marked his debut with a goal.
The Baggies remain in eighth, four points behind Everton.
