Antonio Conte's first match as Tottenham Hotspur head coach ended in a goalless draw at Everton.
Chances were at a premium during the opening 45 minutes, with Spurs wing-backs Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilon missing the best opportunities.
Spurs gained more control in the second half and went close as Ben Davies flashed a shot wide.
Everton were awarded a penalty on 64 minutes after Hugo Lloris was adjudged to have fouled Richarlison, but the decision was overturned by referee Chris Kavanagh after a VAR review.
Everton's Demarai Gray was unable to turn in from Lucas Digne's cross with eight minutes remaining and Spurs' Giovani Lo Celso hit a post late on before Mason Holgate was sent off for the home side in stoppage time.
Having initially been shown a yellow card for a dangerous challenge on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Kavanagh upgraded to a straight red following a VAR review.
After ending a run of three successive defeats, Everton sit 11th on 15 points, one behind ninth-placed Spurs.
