Alex Iwobi struck a dramatic late winner as 10-man Everton moved three points clear of the relegation zone with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Newcastle United.
Everton made a lively start in a frenetic Goodison Park atmosphere, with Ben Godfrey heading Demarai Gray's fourth-minute corner straight at goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Newcastle grew into the match, reflected by their 67 per cent possession and six shots on target in the opening half, but none troubled Everton 'keeper Asmir Begovic, making his first Premier League start since September 2021.
Anthony Gordon's curling effort was clawed away by Dubravka as Everton pressed for the opening goal after the break.
Their hopes looked to be dashed when Allan was dismissed on 83 minutes following a VAR review for a challenge on Allan Saint-Maximin.
But Everton dug in and late into stoppage time, Iwobi exchanged passes with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and drove in to the bottom corner.
Everton's first win and clean sheet in five matches takes them to 23 points in 17th spot, three clear of third-bottom Watford and with two matches in hand.
Newcastle remain 14th on 31 points.
