Dan Agyei's goal earned Burnley a 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion to secure their place in the last 16 of the Premier League Cup.
Reaching the knockout stages seemed improbable after Burnley lost their opening match 7-1 to AFC Bournemouth but they went unbeaten for their next four matches.
Agyei's 21st goal of the season, which came in the second minute of Friday's match, sent the Clarets top of Group C above AFC Bournemouth and knocked out Liverpool, who finished third.
West Brom would have qualified with victory, but finished bottom.
