On his return to his former club, Diogo Jota scored the only goal to give Liverpool a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers that took them up to sixth place in the table.

Jota fired past Rui Patricio at his near post in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, after a rapid move involving Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Mane had rounded Patricio earlier in the half but could not force the ball into the net, and he also sent a diving header wide shortly before Jota struck.

Wolves had started brightly, Alisson saving a Nelson Semedo shot in the fifth minute.

Former Liverpool defender Conor Coady put an early second-half header wide, while at the other end Patricio denied Salah a late second with a fingertip save.

But the Wolves goalkeeper suffered a head injury shortly after colliding with Coady as he tried to stop another Salah shot, and he left the field on a stretcher after lengthy treatment.

Liverpool's first Premier League victory in three matches takes them up to 46 points, ahead of Everton on goal difference and five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Wolves are now winless in four matches and remain 13th on 35 points.
