A move to Tottenham Hotspur makes James Maddison an appealing midfield option in 2023/24 Fantasy Premier League.
The former Leicester City playmaker looks set to be a key figure in Spurs’ first season under Ange Postecoglou.
Maddison is likely to play as an advanced central midfielder in the new head coach’s attacking 4-3-3 formation.
He arrives in north London as a proven Fantasy asset, recording 130+ points in four of his five seasons with Leicester.
When assessing Maddison’s output for Leicester last season, his pitch time has to be taken into consideration.
He started only 28 matches and played almost 1,000 minutes fewer than Harry Kane, yet he matched the forward's nine assists and also scored 10 goals.
Using frequency statistics is the best way to assess Maddison’s impact last season.
He was involved in a goal every 130 minutes, either scoring or assisting.
By contrast, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski were involved in a goal every 180 and 230 minutes respectively.
Maddison vs Spurs attackers 2022/23
Player | Goals | Assists | Total | Mins per goal/assist |
Kane | 30 | 9 | 39 | 87 |
Maddison | 10 | 9 | 19 | 130 |
Son | 10 | 6 | 16 | 180 |
Kulusevski | 2 | 7 | 9 | 230 |
Further analysis of last season shows the all-round influence Maddison can bring to Spurs.
His average of 29 minutes per shot was bettered only by the 26 of Kane, while his 85 minutes per shot on target were very similar to the 80 minutes of Son.
The creativity numbers, in particular, indicate where Maddison can excel.
His averages of 36 minutes per key pass and 206 minutes per big chance created were quicker than any Spurs attacker in the last season.
Minutes per attacking contribution 2022/23
Player | Shot | Shot on target | Key pass | Big chance created |
Kane | 26 | 57 | 60 | 243 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Maddison | 29 | 85 | 36 | 206 |
Son | 36 | 80 | 47 | 360 |
Kulusevski | 48 | 207 | 44 | 296 |
Maddison's arrival, combined with Postecoglou's tactics, can limit the need for Kane to drop deep and collect the ball, allowing the forward to spend more time in the opposition box.
The midfielder's delivery from free-kicks and corners could also have an impact on Son, who had a large share of set-piece duties last campaign.
If Maddison remains at his cost of £8.0m from the start of last season, he boasts the all-round threat to emerge as a strong midfield option for Postecoglou's Spurs in 2023/24.
