Jurgen Klopp has said that Liverpool will likely appeal against the red card that was shown to Alexis Mac Allister in the 3-1 win over AFC Bournemouth.

The Liverpool midfielder was shown a straight red by referee Thomas Bramall for serious foul play on Ryan Christie.

The card means that Mac Allister will miss Liverpool’s next three Premier League matches, starting with the trip to Newcastle United next weekend, followed by a home match with Aston Villa and then a visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"It's harsh, this shouldn't have been a red card," Klopp said.

"It's a mistake and the punishment of playing 40 minutes with 10 men is already punishment enough. We have to talk to the authorities.

"There was contact but there is contact in a game all the time. If he gives a yellow card nobody would say, 'By the way, you need to have another look at that.'

"The amount of times I've already been asked about it shows it is worth discussing again, which we will probably do.

"I asked Macca and he said, 'He touched him, but not really.’

"If we have a list of points of what you need to give a red card, besides contact there's no other box ticked."

'I hope Trent's OK'

Despite the win, Klopp also saw two players limp off in Trent Alexander-Arnold and goalscorer Luis Diaz.

Being asked if Alexander-Arnold was OK after his substitution, Klopp said: "I hope so. He told me now he got a kick and it was pretty painful.

"But as far as he felt it didn't twist or whatever, it was a kick and that's why we changed then. But I hope he will be fine."
