Sunderland were relegated from the Premier League after Josh King's late goal gave AFC Bournemouth a 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light.
David Moyes' side knew they had to match Hull City's result to maintain their top-flight status.
King's strike, along with Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic saving a late penalty to earn the Tigers a point with Southampton, combined to end Sunderland's 10-year stay in the top flight.
There was a lively start from both, but it was the visitors who came the closest, when King chipped Jordan Pickford, but the ball bounced back off the woodwork.
The match seemed to be heading for a draw but Sunderland were caught on the break in the 88th minute and King tapped in to become only the second Norwegian to reach 15 goals in a season after Manchester United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
